What Happens to Skin at Thirty
Collagen production drops by roughly one percent a year, beginning in the late twenties. At thirty, most women still do not see wrinkles but already feel the change: the skin loses a little of its tautness, recovers more slowly after a hard night, loses some of its natural radiance. This is not imagination. It is biology.
The common mistake is to wait until the signs appear and only then begin to "correct." At thirty there is nothing to correct yet. There is something to maintain.
The Difference Between Correction and Maintenance
An anti-aging treatment in the forties and fifties aims to stimulate aggressive regeneration of tissue that has already declined. At thirty we are still in the prevention stage. The aim is to preserve the quality of the skin you have and to gently encourage the body to produce new collagen and elastin, rather than waiting for the moment when the need becomes dramatic.
The clinical meaning: less aggressive treatments, less frequent ones, and more attention to the skin barrier and to the biological activity of the tissue.
At thirty, the best treatment is the one in which you feel nothing special. You only see it years later.
What Does Work at This Age
At my clinic, the protocol for a woman of 30 is usually built from four components:
Gentle microneedling at a depth of 0.5 to 1.0 mm. A depth small enough to stimulate collagen production without significantly wounding the skin. Frequency: once every two to three months, no more.
Peptide serums at home. Peptides such as Matrixyl and Argireline are included in formulations aimed at supporting the texture of the skin and the appearance of fine lines, as part of a continuing routine. Building them into the home routine keeps the work continuous between treatments.
Vitamin C at an effective concentration, every morning. Antioxidant protection from sun damage and from air pollution. At my clinic I recommend a concentration of 15 to 20 percent, stable at a low pH.
SPF 50 every day, in winter too. Most of the signs that will show at forty are formed in the skin at twenty and thirty, from UV exposure. This is the least expensive and most important protection there is.
When It Makes Sense to Add Fractional RF
Fractional RF, which heats the deep layers of the skin to stimulate collagen, is an excellent technology but not essential at 30 for most women. At my clinic I offer it when there are early signs of lost firmness, or when a client is planning a significant event and wants a gentle, immediate lift.
A reasonable schedule: a series of three treatments 4 to 6 weeks apart, followed by one maintenance treatment a year.
